Karver KPW150 Winch Extra Power
The KPW150 is an innovative and very (very) efficient 4-speed automatic winch : 2 speeds identical to other winches on the market PLUS 2 additional extremely powerful speeds… 3 times more powerful than any other winch on the market. The KPW is more for boaters who are tired of forcing their winches.
The KPW150 has the same dimensions as a size 50 winch (220 mm base) but it has the power of a winch 2 to 3 times bigger. But what to do with so much power ? The answer is simple : 3 times more power means above all 3 times less effort to pull a similar load. In other words, the KPW just makes boating a lot less physical and more enjoyable. The KPW is so powerful that it becomes a real alternative to electric winches. The sea is finally becoming accessible to all.
Karver Tips:
- Never use a Karver winch as a docking cleat in order to not stress unnecessarily the internal load sensor.
- If you change to a KPW, you will always find the 2 speeds of a traditional winch. What we additionally offer are 2 extra speeds that are much more powerful.
- If your goal is to maneuver quickly, choose our KSW range instead.
- On a KPW winch the 2 additional speeds are the last 2. On a KSW winch, the 2 additional speeds are the first 2.
- Some customers would like to combine the 2 standard speeds, the 2 ultra fast speeds of the KSW and the 2 ultra soft speeds of the KPW… Sorry, but that is not possible! We will have to make a choice!
- The arrow on the headstock indicates the 1st gear which is always the fastest.
- The 4 speeds are instinctive. As soon as the efforts are too great, change direction and the speed will change automatically.
- The winch returns to 1st gear at each tack / jibe as soon as the load in the line drops sharply.
- The materials used in our KPW winches are much more resistant than those of a classic winch. This is the reason why our workloads are higher than our competitors. It is an extremely important element in the choice of the model. Concretely, if you were to use a standard size 46 winch, you could very well install a KPW110 which has the same dimensions as a size 40 winch. This makes it possible to have a cheaper winch, lighter but still with a power 3 times greater. Our competitors are not too keen on advertising their winch workloads. However, you will find the information in the documentation accompanying the winches.
- The 3rd gear of the KPW is the most powerful and the longest. 4th gear allows racers to “pump” but it is rarely used by boaters.
- The number (KPW130) indicates the power of the winch : For a KPW130, this means that for 1kg applied on the crank, the winch develops 130 kg on the line. Thus, for a load of 250 kg (frequent average load), less than 2 kg must be applied on the crank with a KPW against more than 10 kg on a conventional winch.
- Customers who “struggle” with limited power with their winches have 3 alternatives : use an electric crank, upgrade their winches for electric models or use our winches to make them very soft to use. The solution of changing your winches to a size or two larger is to be avoided. Going from a size 40 to a size 46 only provides 12% more power. Going from a size 40 to a KPW110 (same dimensions) provides 275% more power without having to modify the support.
- The winch is so powerful that it is possible to use a very short handle either for the use of a winch under a hood, or to adjust the sheet while steering (particularly useful with a tiller).
- The Sailors who do regular splices will greatly appreciate the gain in power in a small space.
- The KPW is not just for boaters. Many sailors use it for specific functions such as running backstays or foiling control.
